1) Learn the four types
Use General truths, rules, routines (always true).
if + present simple, present simple
If you heat water to 100°C, it boils.
If I’m tired, I go to bed early.
Tip: Type 0 talks about facts, not the future.
Use Real and possible future results.
if + present simple, will + infinitive
If it rains tomorrow, we will stay at home.
If you study, you will pass the test.
Think: a real plan or promise.
Use Unreal/imaginative present or future.
if + past simple, would + infinitive
If I were rich, I would travel the world.
If he had more time, he would learn Spanish.
Note: use were for all persons in formal English (“If I were…”).
Use Unreal past (things that didn’t happen).
if + past perfect, would have + past participle
If she had studied, she would have passed.
If we had left earlier, we would have caught the bus.
Often used for regrets or criticism.
